Meet the Team: Varun Sewal- Data Scientist at Toric

Today, we’re going behind the scenes with Toric's Data Analyst Varun Sewal.

How did you get started at Toric?

I found out about Toric a week before the product launched from a recruiter who reached out to me on LinkedIn.

My first interview was with Thiago, the CEO, and co-founder of Toric, and as soon as he showed me the Toric platform I got behind the product and the no-code vision. The product was so exciting and was an immediate solution for many of the pain points I experienced in data science. I wanted to be a part of it.

What made you choose data science?

I personally got started with Math and Econ and wanted to combine them. I tried to learn coding at the same time and it was interesting but I didn’t want to code for the rest of my life. I started researching data, tried a few internships, and just went for it.

The momentum with data science is new and amazing.

When I started my data science program it was a new thing but I got my degree it really started to pick up and there are many opportunities in data and analysis.

What does your day look like at Toric?

The best thing about being remote is the lack of commute - I can just roll out of bed and start my day and when I’m off I can just do what I need to do. I can start whenever I want to and the schedule is really flexible too. It's simply important that you are getting your work done and that's all.

Right now as I am onboarding with Toric I’m working on a lot of data apps. So I’m looking for data sets and building apps.

I found data from soccer league, stock market analysis, or take data from Kaggle to create these apps. Analysis of top songs in Spotify for example doing some analysis on apps that I find interesting and I think others will find interesting.

The best thing is while I am free to learn on my own if I have any questions there is no lack of resources. Everyone is very responsive and easy to collaborate with. I work with the data team- Vi & Tanay and I ask them questions in the group chat and when I have improvements I just talk to the product team directly. I even talk to Thiago directly as product improvement suggestions or questions come up.

What Toric product feature are most excited about?

From data science perspective the dataflow structure for sure.

In Python, I get stuck on something and I don’t know what I need to fix. The dataflow aspect makes that so much easier. I can work backwards and find my mistakes- it simply makes my life easier as a data scientist.

Another aspect that excited me at a first impression and still continues to excite me is the data analysis of 3D designs- it’s not something I have seen before and the way Toric does it continues to impress me.

Communities you are active in what do you do there?

I am a lurker right now in LinkedIn DataScience Groups.

I also like going through medium articles on data science because its easy to continuously dive into topics.

Advice for people looking to become data professionals.

Data science on its own has a lot of scope. For aspiring data scientists, I would say if you get experience in machine learning gives you an edge and I think there is a lot of opportunities there.

For aspiring data analysts -asking questions is a great entry point with data.

The way that you work with data analysis is by asking questions and then answering them with the data you have. And there is a difference between asking questions and backtracking trying to figure out how to answer it.

You need to have questions. The other way to do it is to be open-ended but it just doesn't make sense after a point.

Additionally- I like this idea- it's something my professor said- Instead of having one expert opinion having the opinion of 1000 idiots is better. I like that idea and it sticks in my mind for data science to illustrate how important it is to take different data points.

You can have an average data set that is not so great with just basic information- but if you have the right questions you can get some interesting answers.
